Corporate Cup Challenge at YMCA of South Palm Beach County

Fifth Third Bank won the 2011 Corporate Cup Challenge.
The latest fitness and money-maker craze will take place Saturday, Nov. 17, when the YMCA of South Palm Beach County holds its second Corporate Cup Challenge.

The challenge is open to local companies who can field teams of 10-15 people to compete in 15 different events, including tug of war, an obstacle course and a raft relay. The cost is $1,000 per team

"We heard that other Y's were having success with this event," says Cindy Grassi, business manager at the Peter Blum Family branch in Boca Raton.

The Boca Y started small, had seven companies enter last year. Grassi is hoping to double that number this year.

The challenge is great for team-building and building communication with each other, she says. Money raised goes directly to the Y's financial assistance program, which allows everyone, regardless of ability to pay, access to the Y's programs, says Kery Knutson, director of membership development and marketing.

Spreading the word

Each team is graded on a point system because every event is timed, Grassi  explains. Extra points are awarded to teams where the CEO participates, everyone wears a company T-shirt and a company banner is displayed.

The winning team gets to keep the Corporate Cup trophy for a year. In fact, she says, Fifth Third Bank, based in Ohio, displayed it at the various branches in South Florida where the winning team members worked. The bank recently returned the trophy to the Boca Y, she says.

The branch is touting its Corporate Cup Challenge in various ways, Grassi says. She lists them as: its volunteer board (last year's winner, Fifth Third Bank, had a member on the Y's board), the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce, companies that participated last year, Facebook, Twitter, the Y's website and an ad in the Sun-Sentinel newspaper.

And now, for my numbers

I had my best walking day last week on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, when I walked:

Steps: 10,386
Miles: 5.2
