Runners in the 2011 Turkey Trot |
This Thursday, better known as Thanksgiving Day, the United Way of Palm Beach will offer that chance when it hosts the 4th annual Turkey Trot.
The 5K path of the race begins and ends in Bradley Park, near the renovated Publix grocery store with valet parking.
The course heads north along the North Lake Trail bicycle path, turns east on Plantation Road, then south on North County Road and loops west on Wells Road.
Participation limited
Registration, which costs $25 until Tuesday, is limited to 500 participants. Race-day registration costs $50. But don't be late. The race starts promptly at 7 a.m.
The Turkey Trot raises money for families in need, Goodale says. This year, they hope to feed families through two local charities: Adopt-A-Family and The Lord's Place.
Islanders in charge
Costumed "Islanders" in the 2011 Turkey Trot |
Last year, the zany bunch wore Thanksgiving-related costumes to the race.
The Islanders' chairman Cara Coniglio McClure sported an Indian maiden costume. But now that she is eight months pregnant that "costume won't fit," she reveals. So she might have to be an "ear of corn," an outfit worn last year by one of her sisters. Or she might try to find another costume online.
The Coniglio family moved to Palm Beach in the early 1980s. Cara grew up working in her family's local restaurants, which now number three in Palm Beach: Cha Cha's, Cucina dell'Arte and Nick & Johnnies. The family also runs the E.R. Bradley's Saloon and Hole in One golf-course restaurants in West Palm Beach. Her mom Gail is mayor of Palm Beach.
