Recruiting for Let's Move team

Do you walk, swim, run or workout in Palm Beach County? If so, consider yourself recruited for the Extra Steppers Team as we try to be Number 1 in the Let's Move campaign.

Runners in the annual Palm Beach United Way Turkey Trot.

Aaron Wormus of aGuyOnClematis fame and I are joining together again on the Extra Steppers Team. You can enter your minutes here.

We already recruited Jeanne Taylor, a youth librarian at the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach, and her surfing scientist husband, Bob Taylor.

Friend Tara Husband, a social media strategist, will join us -- as soon as I send her the link.

The county campaign started on Jan. 10 and runs until Jan. 31. At the Boynton Beach Community Redevelopment Agency board meeting Tuesday, Jan. 12, Board Member Woodrow Hay mentioned that his city needs to maintain its Number 1 ranking in the Let's Move campaign. Last year, city staffers logged 164,620 minutes.

The Palm Healthcare Foundation and CBS 12 launched the Let's Move campaign in April 2013, joining First Lady Michelle Obama and her Let's Move Initiative, started in 2010.

Even POTUS and the vice president were involved last year.

Palm Healthcare, started from the sale of Good Samaritan and St. Mary's medical centers, was created to improve the health of county residents. The foundation is based in downtown West Palm Beach, a good location for its semi-weekly walks on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On each of those days, a group leaves from the building at about 5:10 p.m. for a 30-minute walk around the city, says Nichole Barlow, communications coordinator.

I hope to see you on the Thursday walk and remember to keep moving! When you join the Extra Steppers team, you can get a Let's Move T-shirt for free. Let me know what size T-shirt you wear in the comments section below.

And now, for my numbers

I had my best walking day last week on Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, when I walked:

Steps: 11,983
Miles: 6.0

  1. Thanks for including me Jane! Do we have to walk with the group or can we log independent miles?

  2. You can log your independent workouts, does not have to be a group activity. If you walk your dog, you can include its minutes, too -- just kidding.
Thanks for reading my blog, Bridget!
