Trying 'Turtleween' in Juno Beach

I thought the sea turtles would be dressed in costumes, but only the guides were at "Turtleween" held Saturday before Halloween.

For a fun four hours, princesses, super heroes, Army guys in camouflage and firemen took over the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach. The kids received candy, made turtle masks and lanterns and listened to spooky stories.

Because it was free, some enviro education was added by the guides who were standing among the sea turtle tanks. They just oozed sea turtle info.

Spiderman greeted visitors on arrival.

Princess alert

Princesses were everywhere at the event and
one stopped to learn about a real sponge.

And a queen

Dressed as the Queen of Hearts, this woman attracted the
attention of the young girls as they oohed and aahed as
she floated past them.

Turtle tattler

I liked listening to this guide, dressed as a spicy mustard
squeeze bottle. He told us what sea turtles like to eat and that
older ones are vegetarian. In the wild, the vegetarian eaters
would likely eat sea grass, but in captivity that is not an option.
They are fed greens, but not just any greens. Sea turtles don't like
iceberg lettuce because it has no nutritional value. Who knew
sea turtles had such discriminating palates?

Mask maker

This Sponge Bob-dressed volunteer helped kids make
turtle masks.

Call 911

To add to the drama of the day, a sea turtle is wheeled into the
 operating room. Condition unknown.

Chocolate witch's hat

Meanwhile in the Learning Center, a girl wearing leopard
ears assembles a witch hat from a chocolate-covered cookie
base. She tops it with a dab of icing, then carefully places
a Hershey kiss on top. Sweet!!!

Huggable guy

Fletch, the center's mascot, made the rounds as some of the
braver young ones posed with him. This little pumpkin ran
up to Fletch and hugged him around the knees.

I clocked an extra mile, just walking around the center, which was pleasant to visit on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

Happy Halloween!

And now, for my numbers

I had my best walking day last week on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014, when I walked:

Steps: 13,010
Miles: 6.5
